ERCOT Deploys NewGrid Software to Support Operations Planning
Austin, TX – November 17 – Today, Dr. Pablo Ruiz, NewGrid CEO, discussed transmission topology optimization applications and case studies at the ERCOT Demand Side Working Group (DSWG) meeting. ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to 24 million Texas customers, which represents 90 percent of the state’s electric load. As the independent system operator for the region, ERCOT schedules power on an electric grid that connects more than 46,000 miles of transmission lines and 570 generation units. To meet its mission of serving the public by ensuring a reliable grid, efficient electricity markets, open access and retail choice in its footprint, ERCOT is at the forefront of utilizing advanced software technology. NewGrid Router, the first transmission topology optimization software package, is a fast search engine that identifies switching scheme solutions to reduce congestion and overloads. NewGrid software supports ERCOT’s operations planning decision-making.
During the annual Constraint Management Plan review, ERCOT staff used NewGrid Router to identify and develop an alternate solution to a plan that otherwise would have required load shedding. This new plan improves grid reliability by preventing customer interruptions under a transmission outage event in northern Texas. In addition, NewGrid Router has helped verify that the plans selected are the most effective solutions.
