NewGrid Presents Transmission Topology Optimization Study at SPP ORWG Meeting
Little Rock, AR — May 30 — Today, Dr. Pablo Ruiz, CEO and CTO of NewGrid, discussed the application of topology optimization software in Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Operations and Operations Planning at the SPP Operating Reliability Working Group Meeting. Dr. Ruiz presented results of a study evaluating the performance and benefits of using topology optimization to support SPP business processes ranging from real-time operations to operations planning and long-term planning. By focusing on recent real-time system snapshots selected by SPP with complex and extreme congestion and overload conditions, the analyses addressed how the technology could practically be used by SPP today. The study, conducted by The Brattle Group and NewGrid working with SPP staff, found that there are significant reliability, market efficiency, and renewable utilization benefits in the application of topology optimization software. Based on study findings, SPP developed a new standing operating guide to address recurring transmission overloads in Southern Oklahoma.
